This poster set is designed to support teachers teaching the Year 8 Biology topic Evolution in the New Zealand Science Curriculum (2026). These posters support the following achievement objectives:
– Fossils provide evidence that organisms have appeared in many
different forms throughout Earth’s history.
– Evidence (e.g. fossils, shared traits, DNA evidence) supports
the theory that populations and species have changed over
time.
– Individuals within a species show variation in their traits
– Some variation is heritable, meaning it can be passed from
parents to offspring.
– Features of the environment that affect survival or reproduction
are called selection pressures (e.g. limited food).
– Natural selection is a process in which heritable differences
between individuals influence their chances of surviving and
reproducing in the presence of selection pressures (e.g. cold
extremes, sun exposure).
– Over many generations, individuals with traits that increase
survival or reproduction are more likely to leave offspring.
– Evolution describes these changes in traits within populations
over generations, not within individuals.
– Over long periods, trait changes accumulate, resulting in new
species forming from a shared ancestor..
– Evidence collected to date supports the theory that all living
organisms are related through common ancestry.

This set uses examples of organisms in New Zealand ecosystems including birds and insects.
